The textile industry releases carbon neutrality standards on National Low Carbon Day in 2024

On May 15th, which is National Low Carbon Day, the China Textile Industry Federation released three group standards: "Technical Specifications for the Creation and Evaluation of Carbon Neutrality Factories in the Textile Industry," "Technical Specifications for the Evaluation of Carbon Neutrality Textiles," and "Technical Specifications for Carbon Labeling of Textiles." This marks the important role of standards in leading green and low-carbon development, promoting industrial transformation and upgrading, and promoting the transformation of traditional productivity to new quality productivity, promoting high-quality industrial development in China's textile industry.

It is reported that the China Textile Industry Federation launched the "Carbon Management Innovation 2020 Action" in 2017, promoting independent emission reduction actions by industry enterprises and promoting the transformation and upgrading of green development in the industry; In 2021, the "Fashion Brand 30 · 60 Carbon Neutrality Acceleration Plan" was launched, with 64 key industry brands and manufacturing enterprises joining the plan. The three group standards were proposed by the China Textile Industry Federation and were initiated in July 2022. After 20 months of drafting and approval, they were implemented in March 2024. A total of 22 "Fashion Brand 30 · 60 Carbon Neutrality Acceleration Plan" action enterprises and 9 sub industry organizations participated in the drafting of the standards.

Carbon neutrality factories have become an important lever for industrial low-carbon transformation. The Technical Specifications for the Creation and Evaluation of Carbon Neutrality Factories in the Textile Industry standardize the process of creating and evaluating carbon neutrality factories in textile enterprises, and provide detailed guidance for each step in the preparation, implementation, and evaluation stages.

The Technical Specification for Carbon Neutral Textile Evaluation innovatively establishes the evaluation process for carbon neutral textiles, clarifies the product carbon footprint accounting method, ensures accurate calculation of greenhouse gas emissions throughout the entire lifecycle of textiles, and proposes methods and examples for evaluating the quality level of textile carbon footprint data.

The Technical Specification for Carbon Labeling of Textiles focuses on standardizing the details of textile carbon footprint disclosure, scientifically dividing it into "should be disclosed", "should be disclosed", and "can be disclosed", facilitating the disclosure of information by the disclosure subject in an open, transparent, and easily understandable manner, and helping consumers make green consumption decisions.

Yan Yan, Vice President of the China Textile Industry Federation and Director of the Social Responsibility Office, pointed out that the introduction of these three standards fills the gap in relevant standards in the textile industry, providing standardized and standardized guidance for textile enterprises to move towards carbon neutrality goals. China Textile Federation will also accelerate the research and development of relevant standards and industry tools.

Yan Yan said that the Technical Specifications for the Creation and Evaluation of Carbon Neutrality Factories in the Textile Industry and the Technical Specifications for the Evaluation of Carbon Neutrality Textiles provide technical guidance for textile enterprises to adopt new materials, processes, and equipment, which will promote the formation of new green and low-carbon manufacturing models. The construction of carbon neutrality factories will vigorously promote new technologies for energy conservation and emission reduction, and cultivate intelligent and green new quality productivity. The implementation of these three standards also requires enterprises to increase their technological innovation efforts, drive innovation in management and business models, and improve resource utilization efficiency.

It is reported that from May 30th to 31st this year, the China Textile Industry Federation will hold the 3rd "Climate Innovation Fashion Summit" in Beijing. At that time, these three standards will be introduced and standard pilot work will be launched.
